The Amida Buddhist Order is a community of people who practice Pure Land Buddhism. We take refuge through a practice called the nembutsu, which is saying the name of Amida Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light. The way we usually say this is: Namo Amida Bu. We are disciples of Amida Buddha and follow the teachings of the Buddha. The purpose of the order is to nurture compassionate action in the world.
Pure Land Buddhism emphasises the vulnerable and fallible nature of ordinary human beings, the centrality of the nembutsu and the necessity of connecting with a wise and loving power which is greater than ourselves. We are a welcoming and friendly community. We are foolish beings of wayward passions who feel accepted by Amida Buddha all the same, just as we are.
The Amida Buddhist Order is an Unincorporated Charity, which is managed by a Committee of Trustees called Amida Gana. The current Trustees are:
- Susthama – Chairperson
- Paripurna – Education Lead
- Samprinana – Treasurer
